Cartilage Flatbacks

By Charlotte cartilage flatbacks have been thoughtfully designed with comfort and style in mind.

Our 14k gold flatback cartilage earrings feature 18-gauge internally threaded posts with flat, lunar shaped backs.

Internally threaded means that the screw is attached to the jewel, this allows the post to glide smoothly through the piercing without causing trauma.

Frequently Asked
Questions

Can I wear the 14k Gold Diamond Celestial Sleepers in the chlorinated or sea water?

Unlike crystals, diamonds won’t dull over time which means they can be worn while swimming in chlorinated or sea water. This makes them the perfect investment for a forever piece. However, be sure to give your earrings a clean every now and then to keep them sparkly.

What is the difference between an internally threaded earring and traditional stud?

Internally threaded cartilage earrings generally have a thicker post (gauge), feature a screw in pendant design and flat back. Traditional stud earrings have a butterfly back closure that slides onto the earring post to keep it in place. The mechanism of internally threaded earrings allows the post to glide smoothly through an ear piercing without causing trauma and ensures comfort and security during wear.

Why are internally threaded earrings more suitable for cartilage piercings than traditional studs?

Internally threaded earrings have a screw in pendant which allows the post of the earring to glide smoothly through the ear piercing without causing trauma. The flat back of internally threaded earrings also allows for comfortable wear while preventing irritation, which may occur from traditional posts or butterfly back closures. The screw in mechanism also means the earring is more secure than traditional earrings with butterfly backs.

How do I insert an internally threaded cartilage earring?

1.     Unscrew the jewel from the back post. Hold the back piece (flatback post) and twist the front jewel anti-clockwise.
2.     Gently insert the flatback post through the back of your ear piercing.
3.     While holding the flatback post in place, insert the jewel into the post from the front. Twist the jewel clockwise to secure.
4.     To remove your flatback earring, hold the back of the earring and twist the front jewel anti-clockwise to unscrew it.

How do I open your daith cartilage earring styles?

Our daith styles feature a horizontal clicker closure with a forward-facing design.

Which post length should I get for my piercing?

Our 6.5mm cartilage flatback earrings will be suitable for the average healed helix, tragus, conch, flat and lobe piercings. If you are wanting to be pierced with our jewellery, we recommend using our 8mm cartilage flatback earrings to allow for swelling. However, they will also fit a healed piercing if you require a longer post.

What is the difference between your Purity Daith Cartilage Earring and Purity Sleeper?

Our Purity Daith Cartilage Earring and Purity Sleeper have the same inner diameter (8mm). However, the Daith Cartilage Earring has a thicker gauge at 16G (1.2mm). Daiths are pierced with a 16G needle, so if you would like to be pierced with our earring, we would suggest the Purity Daith Cartilage Earring. If you have been wearing a thinner gauge in your daith piercing, then our Gold Purity Sleeper will be appropriate.

What does gauge mean and what is the gauge of By Charlotte’s cartilage earrings?

Gauge refers to the thickness of the earring post.

Our cartilage flatback earrings are 18 gauge (1mm) which means they are thicker than the standard stud earring at 20 gauge (0.8mm).

Our daith cartilage earrings are 16 gauge (1.2mm) which means they are thicker than our cartilage flatbacks and standard stud earrings.

What metal is your cartilage earrings made from?

Our cartilage earrings are 14k gold. Our 14k gold earrings are forever yours, meaning they won’t tarnish. Luxe pieces that you can wear all day, every day. Our 14k gold earrings are also nickel free.

What is downsizing?

A longer post length is usually used for new piercings to allow for swelling. Downsizing is the process of shortening the post length after healing so that it better fits the ear.

Do you sell posts separately for downsizing?

Unfortunately, we do not currently offer this! We recommend signing up to our newsletter and following us on Instagram to be the first to know about new releases.
